Lisa Nguyen's Capilano bungalow sits near the river valley and is surrounded by mature trees, creating a shading scenario that many solar installers would walk away from. Our team's use of micro-inverters and strategic panel placement turned a challenging site into a system achieving over 100% energy offset.
Project Background
Capilano is one of Edmonton's most established east-side neighbourhoods, known for its tree-lined streets and older homes with real character. Lisa's bungalow is no exception. The mature trees surrounding her property created a shading challenge that required careful analysis. Our design team mapped sun exposure throughout the day and across all seasons, placing panels strategically to maximize production. The 3-month design phase ensured every detail was right before a 3-day installation brought the system to life.
What Made This Project Unique
Micro-inverters are the key to this project's success. Unlike string inverters where one shaded panel reduces output for the entire array, micro-inverters allow each panel to operate independently at peak efficiency. Combined with strategic placement based on detailed shade mapping, Lisa's 18-panel system generates 11,081 kWh annually despite the challenging tree coverage common in Capilano and other established Edmonton neighbourhoods.
